Wish We'd Thought of this Sooner

Whenever James and I have attempted to take the Chicco travel system stroller onto the T lately, it's been quite the ordeal. Let's face it -- the MBTA is not exactly stroller- (or even handicap-) friendly. It's basically impossible for one of us to take him on the train in the stroller without the help of the other, and it really is hard work to carry it up and down the stairs in the underground stations.

So on Memorial Day, when we returned from our trip to the Public Garden, I decided to try out the Chicco umbrella stroller we were given by my friend, Allie. I'd always assumed Emmett was still too small to fit into it, but after realizing how big he is for his age, I figured I'd give it a try. Needless to say, James and I wish we'd decided to give it a go sooner. Em fits into it just fine, and it's a heck of a lot lighter for when we need to maneuver stairs and the MBTA! I'm pretty sure Emmett enjoys how his feet are free-hanging. We went for a test drive yesterday, and he really seems to like swinging his feet.

Memorial Day in the Public Garden

Hope everyone enjoyed their Memorial Day yesterday and had wonderful weather like we did here in Boston! Yesterday, James, Emmett and I met James' brother, Shawn and his wife, Sara (and fetal Baby K) for a picnic in Boston's Public Garden. It was a pretty warm day, but we got a nice shady spot under a tree and ate yummy shrimp cocktail, crackers and sandwiches, played some frisbee and enjoyed the beautiful day off.

Mmmm ... rice cereal. Okay, maybe not so much "mmmm" and more like, "Ummmm, Mom? What the heck is this stuff?" I guess we'll try again next week.

The Obsession with Manbabies Continues

I finally found it! I've been meaning to post this video for a while now since it coincides with bloggers' and comedians' recent manbaby craze, but it's not on TV a lot, and I couldn't for my life remember what the commercial was advertising. Well I finally saw the commercial again, so here it is, Boost Mobile's disturbingly odd manbaby commercial. Kind of weird how the "father" has to shuffle down the freezer aisle like that ...

Emmett Discovers His Feet

Em has been totally into his feet lately. It's pretty darn cute. He just can't get enough!

[caption id="attachment_819" align="aligncenter" width="656" caption=""Get those feet!""]"Get those feet!"[/caption]

By the way, I forgot to update you on Emmett's 4-month checkup! He got more shots, which he was not a fan of, and Dr. Reilly gave us the green light to start experimenting with solids (more on that to come). He's healthy and happy as a clam, and apparently not so little anymore -- 16.1 lbs. and 27.5 inches long! That puts Em in the 75th percentile for weight and the 99th percentile for height. Can you believe it? Emmett is the tallest kid in his class! He'll definitely be in the back row during class pictures, just like his mom was.

Baby's First Beach Fire

It sounds way worse than it actually is. Maybe I should've titled it, "Baby's First Fire on the Beach." Eh - either way, it sounds like Emmett is committing arson.

Anyway, during an impromptu trip up to Maine last weekend (James was needed by his parents for some manual labor. I shopped.), we made an awesome little fire on the beach. James' parents actually live right on the coast of Freeport, Maine in Casco Bay. Here's a shot of the fantastic view from their backyard:

[caption id="attachment_811" align="aligncenter" width="640" caption="Backyard View of Casco Bay "]Backyard View of Casco Bay [/caption]

Just beyond the lawn in their backyard, there is a steep embankment that leads down to the beach, which is where we started the fire. Now that I think about it, I'm pretty sure it was actually my first fire on a beach as well (please let me know if I'm wrong and I've actually had a beach fire with you before). Kind of cool to share a first with my own son.

Emmett was definitely mesmerized by the fire ...

Grandpa Mac and Gran Lucy bought Emmett his first life jacket, which makes James and I very excited for Em's first boat ride this summer :)

My First Mother's Day

Posted by Pamela Vaughan

May 14, 2009 1:30:13 PM

Yup - it was my very first Mother's Day last Sunday. Pretty cool. James served me breakfast in bed, and then the three of us headed to James' brother, Shawn's place in Carlisle for a barbecue with him, his wife Sara and James' parents.

There were actually three mothers in attendance. That's right! I realized I never officially announced that James' sister-in-law, Sara is pregnant with a baby Klingener! Now Emmett will have not one, but two male cousins also born in 2009. Sara is due in September, and we all can't wait to meet Baby K!

I'm not going to lie, it was a little weird to be on the receiving end of Mother's Day this year, but it's something I can definitely get used to. And I'm really looking forward to future Mother's Days when Emmett will actually understand what's going on.

The Grandparents Come to Town

Last weekend was awesome, to say the least. It was James' 22nd birthday, my parents came up from New Jersey to visit and we finally decided on a new apartment. Good thing, because I don't know how much more Craig's List surfing I could stand.

It was really nice having my parents around. Needless to say, Em got quite a lot of attention. And, lucky for my parents, they didn't have to change one stinky diaper all weekend (which actually worried us more than it made us happy). James and I were even able to go on a date for his birthday. I took him to a sports bar for some pre-dinner drinks and to watch some Sox and Celtics, and then we headed to the Beehive for a late meal and some live jazz.
