The Six-Hour Sleeping Phenomenon

Are you ready for this? ...

I GOT SIX STRAIGHT HOURS OF SLEEP LAST NIGHT!!!

I know - can you believe it? The little man was asleep from 12:30 a.m. last night until 6:30 a.m. this morning, and needless to say, it was glorious. I felt like a brand new woman this morning. Usually Emmett's sleep stints last a total of two to three hours, and before last night, the longest period of time he's been asleep was four hours (and even that was rare). I'm assuming he looked something like this while he slept ...

Now some of you may be thinking, "Six hours? That's what I get on a bad night." But I assure you, when you become a parent, you and I will be on the same page. For now, I'm going to chalk those six hours of heaven to a fluke so I don't get disappointed tonight when he reverts back to his two to three-hour sleeping pattern. But hey, I'm totally going to keep my fingers crossed. I'll keep you posted.

James and I are also thrilled to report an extreme increase in smile fests, and we were lucky enough to catch some of those precious little smirks on video this afternoon. Check it out (and go ahead, make fun of the high-pitched mommy/daddy voices all you want) ...

My New Resolution: More Video!

Emmett is starting to be a lot more active now. He's getting much better at holding up his head (no more spaghetti neck!), he's awake more frequently throughout the day, his gaze seems more focused and, generally, he's a much squirmier worm. And oh yeah - he's also quite the little talker!

I've decided to celebrate this new development by resolving to record and post more videos of the little guy. Who knows - maybe he'll be the next YouTube baby star! "Charlie bit me," anyone?

Introducing Baby McFussy

The little man has been especially fussy the past few days. If he's not fast asleep or eating, it's pretty safe to assume he's being a little cry baby. Although we can usually pacify him by cradling him in our arms or bouncing him on our knees, sometimes that's not even successful. And even if he is sleeping in our arms, once we put him in his crib or his Pack 'N Play, it's all tears again, which doesn't bode well for a smooth nighttime. By the way, this makes it extremely difficult to blog (one-handed typing while Baby Lump is passed out on top of me isn't exactly easy).

Here's to hoping the muffin man is just going through some kind of growth spurt that will subside within a few days. I'm just glad he didn't turn out to be a colicky baby from the get-go. Still, I'll definitely be happy to have some smoother nights' sleep back.

Baby Mashup

My sister, Adrienne was right. Emmett does look a lot like I did when I was a baby. While most of my baby pictures apparently are in slide format (my dad owned his own slidemaking business back in the day before computers and PowerPoint took over the world), my parents were able to dig up a picture of a five week old me, the same age Emmett is right now!

So though we originally thought Emmett was a spitting image of his dad, it looks like he's actually a pretty equal mashup of the two of us (depending on his facial expression, it seems) ...
