The Lone Mother

Well, I'm alone again. Sans boys. I don't think I've mentioned this yet, but for the entire month of June (and maybe even the first week of July), James and Emmett will be spending every Wednesday night to Friday night in Maine. James is working for his parents' business, Creative Cottages, and since I have a weekly work meeting every Friday, Emmett has to go with him.

Last week was the first week they went. It was the first night I spent away from Emmett, and while it was nice to have some time to myself (I got a LOT of work done and was able to go to a Tweetup!), it still felt strange to be alone, and I missed both of them terribly. To keep myself occupied, I've made an extensive list of things I want to get done while they're away in June, which includes a ton of magazine-reading, plenty of baths and pedicures and some online shopping.

Other than that, things are going very well. Emmett grows more and more everyday. And all he wants to do is stand up. Seriously, this kid is totally dying to be mobile. Last weekend we enjoyed another lovely visit from my parents. We went for a stroll around BU's campus on Saturday, and on Sunday headed over to the Charles for the Dragon Boat Festival. James and I were also able to go on a date on Saturday night - we saw Angels and Demons (it was awesome!) and hung out with friends.

Hope you enjoyed the update. Gotta get back to my magazine reading!

Baby's First Beach Fire

It sounds way worse than it actually is. Maybe I should've titled it, "Baby's First Fire on the Beach." Eh - either way, it sounds like Emmett is committing arson.

Anyway, during an impromptu trip up to Maine last weekend (James was needed by his parents for some manual labor. I shopped.), we made an awesome little fire on the beach. James' parents actually live right on the coast of Freeport, Maine in Casco Bay. Here's a shot of the fantastic view from their backyard:

Just beyond the lawn in their backyard, there is a steep embankment that leads down to the beach, which is where we started the fire. Now that I think about it, I'm pretty sure it was actually my first fire on a beach as well (please let me know if I'm wrong and I've actually had a beach fire with you before). Kind of cool to share a first with my own son.

Emmett was definitely mesmerized by the fire ...

Grandpa Mac and Gran Lucy bought Emmett his first life jacket, which makes James and I very excited for Em's first boat ride this summer :)

My First Mother's Day

Posted by Pamela Vaughan

Yup - it was my very first Mother's Day last Sunday. Pretty cool. James served me breakfast in bed, and then the three of us headed to James' brother, Shawn's place in Carlisle for a barbecue with him, his wife Sara and James' parents.

There were actually three mothers in attendance. That's right! I realized I never officially announced that James' sister-in-law, Sara is pregnant with a baby Klingener! Now Emmett will have not one, but two male cousins also born in 2009. Sara is due in September, and we all can't wait to meet Baby K!

I'm not going to lie, it was a little weird to be on the receiving end of Mother's Day this year, but it's something I can definitely get used to. And I'm really looking forward to future Mother's Days when Emmett will actually understand what's going on.

The Grandparents Come to Town

Last weekend was awesome, to say the least. It was James' 22nd birthday, my parents came up from New Jersey to visit and we finally decided on a new apartment. Good thing, because I don't know how much more Craig's List surfing I could stand.

It was really nice having my parents around. Needless to say, Em got quite a lot of attention. And, lucky for my parents, they didn't have to change one stinky diaper all weekend (which actually worried us more than it made us happy). James and I were even able to go on a date for his birthday. I took him to a sports bar for some pre-dinner drinks and to watch some Sox and Celtics, and then we headed to the Beehive for a late meal and some live jazz.
